Donald Lazar, Service Director

The Service Department performs and provides a wide variety of services to maintain the city's day to day functions, including but not limited to snow removal, leaf collection, and maintenance of the city parks, streets and buildings.

Richmond Heights contracts with a private waste hauler who is responsible for rubbish removal. Curbside rubbish pickup will occur at your residence on a day specified on the following list. The City recommends trash containers with lids. Trash containers can be placed on the tree lawn either after dusk the night before your pickup or no later than 7:30AM the morning of, and removed from the tree lawn as soon as possible after rubbish pickup.

The following are are the six holidays that could possibly interrupt your rubbish schedule:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth Of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

In the case that one of these holidays does fall during the week, rubbish pickup will be delayed one day. For example, since Memorial Day is observed on a Monday, all the Monday collection streets would be postponed until Tuesday, Tuesday picked up on Wednesday, Wednesday picked up on Thursday, and Thursday picked up on Friday and Friday on Saturday.

There are certain items the waste hauler will not pick up. Those items are automotive parts, blocks of concrete, rocks, earth, and hazardous materials. Yard waste will continue to be picked up on your normal collection day by the contracted hauler, until further notice. Yardwaste must be bundled and tied in manageable size bundles, not to exceed 30 to 40 pounds and 3 to 4 feet in length.

Generally, the hauler picks up large items such as furniture, and appliances on your regular collection day. However, it is wise to contact the city's contracted rubbish hauler (Republic Waste Service), at (216) 741-4013 to inquire as to size of object, dates and any special instructions required.

At this time there is no fee to pick up appliances such as stoves, washers or dryers, etc. Appliances with Freon (refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners) have a special pickup. Call City Hall for information.

Recycling

Richmond Heights is a recycling community and the City encourages its residents to participate. The City picks up recycling items curbside on the same day as your regular rubbish day. Be sure to place your recycling bags apart from your regular rubbish, in the clear or blue plastic recycling bags which are sold at several of the city's merchants. Please separate your recycling items into individual bags:

  • Plastic: Please discard caps, remove labels, and rinse out and flatten containers.

  • Glass: Bottles and jars of clear, green and brown can be mixed together in same bag. Please discard lids, remove label, and rinse out containers.

  • Aluminum/Bi-Metal: All containers can be mixed, please remove labels, rinse container and flatten.

To help assist you in recycling a Recycling Drop-off Center is located at the Service Department at 26260 Chardonview Road. There is an attendant on duty during the drop-off hours to assist you.

Drop-off Center Hours are:

  • Tuesday 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Saturday 9 a.m.– 1 p.m.

Newspaper and magazines are collected only at the Recycling Drop-off Center. Newspapers should be stacked neatly in brown paper bags or loose (ads may be included).

Newspapers are picked up on the 3rd Friday of each month as a service to Senior Citizens who put their name and address on a list at city hall. Call 216-486-2474 if you would like your name to be added.

Unmixed, used motor oil is accepted at the drop-off center in containers with lids.

Paint and other hazardous household materials are NOT accepted at the drop-off center. For direction on disposing of hazardous household materials, contact the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District at 216-443-3749.

Leaf Collection Service

The Service Department typically begins its curbside leaf pick-up service the last week of October, and continues for six weeks or until the majority of the leaves are picked up.

The routes alternate between the north and south side of the city, with any street north of Highland Road being the north side and any street south of Highland Road being the south side. Notice of the routes is posted weekly on the community boards as well as on the 24 hour recorded information line at (216) 383-6300.

Your cooperation is required in following the guidelines below in order to ensure the safety of both personnel and equipment:

  • Please rake leaves to the tree lawn. Do not place leaves in the street. Do not place leaves near a fire hydrant.

  • Branches, twigs, sticks, rocks and grass clippings MUST NOT be mixed in with the leaves. This will cause damage and clogging to the leaf machines.

  • The decision not to pick up leaf piles contaminated with any of the above items will be at the discretion of the Service Director.

  • If you prefer, you may continue to bag your leaves for collection by our rubbish contractor.

  • Please give these guidelines to your landscaper.
